Umit Gunes was born in 1987, Çarşamba/Samsun (Turkey). He graduated from primary school in 1997 (Ayvacık/Samsun) and Çarşamba Anatolian High School in 2005 (Çarşamba/Samsun). In 2005, he enrolled in Kocaeli University’s Department of Science Teaching and pursued his studies there for 2 years. He then moved to Yıldız Technical University’s Department of Naval Architecture and Maritime Engineering in 2007, from which he graduated in 2011. During his undergraduate years, he attended classes in Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) Dusseldorf’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and Fachhochschule Kiel’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. He earned his master’s degree in Analysis of Waste Heat Recovery System on Ships in Terms of Technic and Economic from Yıldız Technical University in 2013 and is still enrolled there as a Ph.D. student. In addition, he is a Ph.D. researcher at Duke University’s Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS). After obtaining his bachelor’s degree, he worked in Metro Istanbul as R & D engineer for 6 months and then, in 2012, began working as a research assistant in Yildiz Technical University’s Department of Naval Architecture and Maritime Engineering. He also serves as an assistant editor of the Journal of Human and Society (2011-present), Nazariyat: Journal of the History of Islamic Philosophy and Sciences (2013-present), and Hendese: Journal of Science, Technology, and Thought (2013-present). He has published one SCI journal article, one international article, 9 conference papers, and 5 edition books. He is married and has one child.
