Abu al-Hasan al- Amiri’s Masa'il al-Rayy: a Critical Edition and Historical Analysis

Abstract

This study examines Masāʾil al-Rayy, a recently discovered treatise by one of the major philosophers in Islamic intellectual history, Abū al-Ḥasan al-ʿĀmirī (d. 381/992). The work, which has been critically edited and analysed from its sole manuscript copy, consists of responses to twelve questions posed to al-ʿĀmirī in the city of Rayy. Six of these questions concern issues such as the problem of religious diversity, the definition of religion, the classification of religions, the nature of disagreements, methodological problems in attaining truth, and the priority sequence that should be followed in the pursuit of truth. These six questions are fundamentally related to scepticism regarding the impossibility of attaining truth due to the multiplicity of religions and countless disagreements concerning religion. Against this claim of impossibility, al-ʿĀmirī developed an approach that serves as a guide to the pursuit of truth and argued that reaching the true religion is possible. The remaining six questions examine, one by one, the fundamental issues on which religions differ from each other. In this context, al-ʿĀmirī addresses the existence of God, His unity, His attributes, prophecy, and sacred books, offering case-by-case resolutions to these disagreements. The article first establishes the work’s attribution to al-ʿĀmirī and its relationship with al-Irshād litaṣḥīḥ al-iʿtiqād. Additionally, it demonstrates al-ʿĀmirī’s network of relationships and his influence on subsequent scholars within the context of this work. The article concludes with a critical edition of the treatise, which serves as a new source for al-ʿĀmirī studies.
